HISTORY: In 1961, in the framework of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, a Department for Mass Transfer Processes was created. It represented the first Bulgarian specialized laboratory for chemical engineering research. Twelve years later, in 1973, this Department was transformed into an independent research unit of the BAS, under the name "Central Laboratory of Theoretical Foundations of Chemical Engineering". By 1986 the latter numbered a staff of 66 employees and it was considered appropriate to convert it into Institute of Chemical Engineering. From its foundation and up to 1989 the Institute was headed by Prof. Dimiter Elenkov, D.Sc., corresponding member of the Academy of Science, from 1989 to 1992 by Prof. Lyubomir Boyadzhiev, D.Sc., who in 1996 was elected a corresponding member of the Academy. From 1992 to 2014 Director was Prof. Venko Beschkov, D.Sc. Over the years, heads of specialized laboratories of the Institute were a lot of outstanding scientists such as Prof. Dimiter Elenkov, D.Sc., corresponding member of the Academy of Science; Prof. Lyubomir Boyadzhiev, D.Sc., corresponding member of the Academy of Science; Prof. Venko Beschkov, D.Sc.; Prof. Hristo Boyadzhiev, D.Sc.; Prof. Nikolay Kolev, D.Sc.; Prof. George Kjuchukov, D.Sc.; Prof. Asen Atanasov, D.Sc.; Prof. George Angelov, D.Sc.; Prof. Boyan Ivanov, D.Sc., Assoc.
